Become a Volunteer
The Islamic Society of Victoria like other non-profit organizations depends heavily on volunteers.
We are currently planning to improve and expand our services. Our needs vary from simple to complex tasks.
Please subscribe here to services you can offer --------------------------------------->
Some of our needs are;
- People who are bilingual and available to translate, verbally and written.
· Sometimes we have members of our community who are new to Australia and do not speak Arabic or English but come to us for assistance. If you are bilingual register with us and when the need arises we will contact you and arrange an appointment for the concerned person that fits in with your availability.
· Occasionally we receive documents in languages other than Arabic and English, or from countries that we aren’t familiar with their processes. Here you can be a great help in verifying documents or pieces of information.
· From time to time we become overwhelmed with work and start to fall behind. If you have a strong background in Arabic and are able to write letters, requests or responses your assistance is needed.
- People who have a background in law especially family and migration.
· We receive a lot of requests for assistance with matters relating to family law. As Muslims living in Australia we have a need for people in this field to give advice on law without compromising on religion. To inform the concerned person(S) on the appropriate ways of dealing with the law.
· As a mainly migrant community (or migrant background) we have a lot of connections with other countries. Members of our community need advice on travel whether it is migration, tourism, work or anything else. Sometimes they may need assistance filling out the forms.
- People with knowledge in event planning and management.
· If you have experience in event planning and management then this is the spot for you. We have many youth and an array of possible activities to run. Projects can be as small and as big as you want. The only thing we ask is that they are often and done in a proper way encouraging more youth to participate.
- People with fundraising skills
· As with any organization our activities and services are limited by our funds. With a steady income and reasonable funds we will be able to accomplish many things.
- People with grant writing skills
· The State and Federal Government release grants regularly for different projects and purposes. If you have grant writing skills and plenty of ideas this could be what you are looking for. Grants can be used to subsidise project we are planning thus making it more accessible to members of our community.
- People with multimedia skills, designing posters and editing lectures
· You might be good with Photoshop or video editing. Whichever, both are needed. Editing the classes, lectures or guest speakers and having them ready for sale or distribution is one of the most needed tasks.
· Preparing quantities of CD’s for distribution, e.g.: topics regarding Ramadan and Fasting as we approach Ramadan. Topics about repentance to distribute at Janazah’s, etc..
· Posters are the primary way of promoting an activity or event. With great taste and imagination your designs can do just that. Promote the Mosques activities and events.
·Designing the Prayer Calendar and Ramadan Poster are also part of the tasks.
- People with child minding qualifications
· If you are experienced in child-minding then your assistance will allow sisters to attend classes and lectures that otherwise they would not be able to attend. The sisters have activities daily ranging from learning how to read Quran, motivational talks (Arabic and English) and Classes. A working with children certificate is a must.
- People able to do gardening and cleaning
· The presentation of the Mosque is one of the most important matters. It will leave a lasting impression on people. The Preston Mosque is visited by Muslims and non-Muslims, young and old, and people of different needs. Most importantly, it is the house of Allah. As a large Mosque and with the amount of people going through our doors daily it is very difficult to keep it clean all the time.
· During Ramadan and on the two Eid’s the amount of cleaning required is multiplied.
- Accounting and book keeping qualifications
- Sales, marketing and inventory (Bookshop)
· If you are familiar with MYOB or Quickbooks and are able to dedicate some time regularly then we need you to assist with our Bookshop. Having all our stock on the computer, priced and sorted is the first step, then we prepare a complete inventory system followed by having the Bookshop online as well.
· You may also have skills in importing or connections overseas. This will assist us in acquiring products at a reduced price, thus selling them at a reduced price making the product more accessible to members of the community.
- People with background in counseling
· We have a need for counsellors who are Muslim, that way they will have religion in mind when assisting a person. This service is mainly for the youth and married couples.
- People able to visit the sick and elderly
· If you are retired and have some free time, then you can use some of this time cheering people up. Visiting sick people in hospital can be rewarding and is very noble. Also the elderly in our community sometimes feel good when they get a surprise visit.
- People able to write articles, pamphlets & information brochures
- People with crowd management skills
· If you have experience with crowd control then you could be a great help. During Ramadan every year we have brothers managing traffic and keeping kids inside the Mosque instead of roaming around the streets.
· The two Eid’s require planning and a large team to ensure that everything goes as smooth as possible.
· Also when we run fetes/festivals during school holidays we also need to manage traffic and the kids.
- Media response
· A person is required to monitor the news and inform us of articles or comments that warrant a response.
· When something is mentioned or printed in the media that we don’t agree with. Here a person is needed to draft a response that is appropriate and balanced.
- Interfaith / Multifaith Involvement
· We encourage members of the community who have a strong background in Islam to attend meetings and participate in community projects that don’t conflict with our beliefs and principles.
